“Canale Incile” Project

The Incile is a canal designed to connect the Navicelli waterway to the River Arno while bypassing the city outskists.

Starting from the Navicelli, it runs north–south near Via Vivoli, making river transport between the Arno and the port of Livorno easier. The project included the construction of a new 130-metre stretch of canal, with locks and exit works into the Arno.

The canal is 11.5 metres wide and is bordered along its entire length by reinforced concrete walls, 70 cm thick and approximately 20 metres long, 17 metres of which lie below the water surface. The canal bed is a 1-metre-thick reinforced concrete slab set 3 metres below water level.

The works also involved emptying the pre-existing canal section, originally built in the early 1970s in reinforced concrete and approximately 200 metres long, strengthening the structure, raising parts of its walls, demolishing and rebuilding the bridge on Via Livornese higher, and removing a large reinforced concrete and steel structure, including a sluice gate built in the 1970s that was never operational.

Other completed works include major maintenance and the restoration of the 1970s swing bridge on Via II Settembre, as well as renovating the road running alongside the Arno banks.
